School carpooling apps in 2026: an honest comparison for families in Spain
GoKid, HopSkipDrive, Zūm, Kango, BlaBlaCar, the WhatsApp group and Kidstoride, compared on what matters to a family: whether they work in Spain, who drives, tracking, payments and price.

Search for "app to share the school run" and you will find American names with plenty of reviews, long-distance ride-sharing apps for adults and, above all, the usual WhatsApp group. This comparison sorts those options by one criterion: what actually helps a family in Spain that wants to take turns driving to school and activities.
The figures are each company's public data as of August 2026. Kidstoride is our app, so judge for yourself with the table and the questions at the end.
What to look at before choosing
- Does it operate in Spain? Obvious, but half the search results do not.
- Who drives? Parents from your own group (peer to peer) or hired professional drivers. They are different products with very different prices.
- How is the driver verified? Identity, number plate, track record.
- Is there live tracking and an arrival notification? And what happens to those positions afterwards.
- How are costs shared? Free among friends, automatic split or a fare per ride.
- How much does it cost and to whom? The family, the club, the school.
The options, one by one
GoKid (US and Canada). The American reference for carpooling among families: parent groups, a shared calendar and a premium tier of around 50 dollars a year with GPS tracking. It is built for the North American school system and does not operate in Spain; you will not find families from your school on it.
HopSkipDrive and Zūm (US). Not parent carpooling: professional services with hired drivers and contracts with school districts. HopSkipDrive requires its drivers to have years of childcare experience and uses in-car telematics; Zūm manages transport for thousands of schools. They are the "school bus on demand" model and are not available in Europe.
Kango (California, Arizona and New Mexico). Mixes parents and professional drivers with a monthly subscription plus pay per ride. Only in three US states.
BlaBlaCar. It does operate in Spain, but it is intercity carpooling among adults: long trips between cities. It is not designed for minors or for daily 5-kilometre trips to school.
Karos (formerly also BlaBlaCar Daily). Daily commuting carpool, present in France, Germany, Denmark and some Spanish municipalities. It is a product for employees and companies, not for taking children.
The WhatsApp group. The real choice of most families. Free and universal, but with no clear turns, no idea who is driving today, no trip tracking and costs "we'll sort out later". We include it in the table because it is the alternative to beat.
Kidstoride (Spain, Portugal, Mexico and Colombia). Carpooling among verified families: private groups for the school, club or neighbourhood; drivers identified with ID and number plate; live tracking with arrival notification and positions deleted after an hour; the driver decides whether the ride is free or cost-shared, and the app collects it. Creating and managing the organisation is free for clubs and parents' associations; families that want to ride use the Plus Plan (€4.99 a month or €49.99 a year). Drivers also accumulate CAE energy-saving credits for every kilometre with passengers.

Which option fits which family
- You want a professional to drive your child and you live in the US: HopSkipDrive or Zūm. Spain has no equivalent at scale; the substitute is school transport contracted by the school.
- You already have three or four trusted families and just need order: anything beats WhatsApp. Kidstoride handles turns, seats, tracking and costs without anyone keeping the books.
- You are a parents' association or club and want to offer it to the whole school or every team: you need groups per class or team, control over who joins and notices to all families. That is the use case of Kidstoride for parents' associations and sports clubs.
- You need to travel between cities with adults: BlaBlaCar remains the reference.
Three questions to ask any app before putting your child in a car
- Can I see who is driving today, in which car, and that they are identified, before they set off?
- Where are the trip positions stored and for how long?
- What happens if the driver drops out at a quarter to eight?
At Kidstoride the answers are: yes, on the trip card; in temporary memory that is wiped within an hour, never in a database; and the group is notified so another driver can offer their seat. If another app answers just as clearly, that is a good sign.
